Q&A’s
What does masala mean?
Masala as a singular word translation just means “spice”. It can also mean “spice blend”. Masala can also refer to a dish, or the taste of a dish. In practice, masala is a way of thinking about food that takes in more than taste—also wellness, personal expression, culture, and faith traditions.
Is masala an Indian thing?
Yes and no. The word is Indian. And the concept is rooted in the traditions of the Indian regions. But all long-lived food traditions think about food as medicine, expression, and culture. Masala does this through an Indian lens.
Is masala different to spices?
Yes. Spices refers to the aromatics themselves, and often in the singular. So cumin seed is a spice, for example. But in traditional Indian regional cooking, when we are talking about the whole end effect or process of a dish, or a group of aromatics, we use the word masala.
Why does masala matter?
Because when we understand the concept of masala, we begin to understand the many ways in which food matters to us. It isn’t just nourishment. How we think about and engage with food gives us another avenue to think about how we are in our life.
